A recent transplant to the New York City area, Mike Bomwell continues a career as a freelance woodwind player and teacher. While residing in the Southeastern Michigan area, he made his mark on the local scene with several jazz and chamber groups, including the Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra, the Plural Circle Orchestra, the Phoenix Ensemble, Bird of Paradise Orchestra, Steve King and the Diddlies, and Al Hill and the Lovebutlers, with whom he performed at the annual Ford Detroit Jazz Festival and on a live broadcast of WDET radio. As part of the Sirens Saxophone Quartet, he received an honorable mention award at the 1999 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. Most recently, Mike has been performing in and around New York City as part of the Euphonique Saxophone Quartet.
Mike is featured on two new jazz recordings, released in Fall 2001, by the Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra and the Bird of Paradise Orchestra. He also appears on a release from the contemporary chamber group, the Phoenix Ensemble, entitled, Relive the Magic, featuring Tony Amore.
A native of Canandaigua, New York, Mike earned degrees in both jazz and classical saxophone from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Mike has performed in the pit orchestra for the shows Grease, Anything Goes, Cabaret, Sideshow, and Swing for various regional theaters. He also served a term as a cruise ship performer, backing up Las Vegas performers and entertaining guests en route to the Bahamas.
Formerly on the faculty of the School for the Performing Arts in Ann Arbor, Mike maintains an active private saxophone studio. He served as Director of Jazz Improvisation for the Michigan Youth Ensembles at the University of Michigan, and as Jazz Workshop Director at the Michigan All-State Camp at Interlochen. He has also performed outreach concert events for children at local schools and at the Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
