David Luther graduated from the University of Michigan, where he received a degree in Jazz Studies. While at UofM, he studied saxophone with Donald Sinta and Donald Walden as well as arranging and composition with Ellen Rowe. David has written and arranged many charts for the UofM Jazz Ensemble and the Octagonists (an eight-piece small ensemble), both of which he was also a member.
David has been establishing himself as a solid and versatile player in the Detroit area, involved in everything from blues to electronica to jazz. Until their recent dissolution, he performed with Cloud 9 Music, a group rooted in the sounds of techno and drum n' bass, but not without a strong sense of R&B and improvisation. During the summer of 2002, David toured nationally with the band, and he also plays on their most recent release, The Notice Co. Lounge. He is a member of Ann Arbor soul and blues man Al Hill's band. David also leads his own quartet, The A-Trap Collaboration, which plays a mix of originals, slightly warped covers, and gratuitous funk improvisations, and appears regularly in Ann Arbor at Goodnight Gracie's. In addition to performing, David has been involved with music for dance, having recently contributed original music to several scores for UofM students and graduates.
Over the past few years, David has played behind or with artists and groups such as Bettye Lavette, Alberta Adams, the Box Tops, the Temptations, the Tommy Dorsey Band, the Flint Symphony, and the Plymouth Symphony. He can be seen occasionally with the Paul Keller Ensemble, the Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra, Phil Ogilvie's Rhythm Kings, and the Latin band Orquestra Inspiracion.
