Ben is quickly becoming known as one of Detroit's finest lead trumpeters. He began his studies at Michigan State University. While at MSU, he began his professional career with the rock/soul/funk band Soulstice and also as a lead/soloist with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps.

Ben moved to the Detroit area in 1997 to finish his Music Education degree at Eastern Michigan University. During his time at EMU, he founded the Jazz Forum, a club for students to listen to and learn more about the history of jazz. While in the area, he continued to play with Soulstice and also became the lead player for the Imperial Swing Orchestra. In 1998, he co-founded the Swing Syndicate, a 13-piece big band.
